The Burbach Tells You to Shut Up!

DANCES WITH WOLVES
****
1990, dir. Kevin Costner, Blu-ray
Still works beautifully. No other film depicts the open country so beautifully and convincingly. The extended cut is what the movie was always meant to be — the story is cohesive and develops at a consistent pace. The only scene that begs — screams — to be cut is Dunbar’s fire dance, with that ridiculous, non-Barry, Narada-worthy music behind it. Otherwise, this is an exquisitely made film that compares favorably to just about every Western ever made. Costner’s direction is fluid, careful, and sensitive.
