The Burbach Tells You to Shut Up!

BRIDESMAIDS
***
2011, dir. Paul Feig, Blu-ray
Sensitive writing and credible performances lift this well above other comedies of this type. Wiig and the cast as a whole are very strong. There are a few significant defects: 1) too many gross-out jokes, 2) the central relationship (between Wiig and Maya Rudolph) is too sketchy to bear the weight of all the drama that follows the inciting incident (Rudolph’s engagement), and 3) it all goes on for far too long (130 minutes!). Nonetheless, there are a number of genuine laughs and Wiig’s character is a fully-realized individual.
